9-Nov-2008   -   Melinda Brown, Australian Silver medalist sets the example for young women
Students of Samurai Judo Academy, Newcastle PCYC recently won gold, silver and bronze medals at the 2008 Australian Judo Titles at Olympic Park, Sydney

One of the most outstanding performances came from Melinda Brown who won the silver medal, only narrowly missing out on gold when leading the final bout up to the last 8 seconds of the match.

“Melinda is one of the rising stars of Samurai Judo Academy at Newcastle PCYC and a testimony to the success of the regional judo program, ” said chief instructor, Ken McKenzie

Melinda has a fantastic support base which includes her father, himself a former National level player, and a host of coaches from the Newcastle based Academy and NSW state team.

One of the goals of Samurai Judo Academy is to build the number of girls and young women who take up judo, whether for sport or for self-defense.

“Judo is also arguably the best form of self defense for women and girls" said sensei McKenzie. "It teaches then what to do in an in-close 'grappling' situation, both in standing and on the ground. When you stop and think about it, this is what you really need to defend yourself as a woman or girl”

Another primary goal is to groom current champions for 2012 Olympic selection, particularly young women in the 15 to 19 yr age group

“We hope to encourage more girls and women to come and try judo for self defense as well as sport"

A beginners program for children aged 7 to 11 years runs at Newcastle PCYC on Wednesday and Friday nights from 6 to 7pm and expressions of interest are being sought for a 4-6 year program. Enquiries can be made at any PCYC or via Samurai Judo Academy on (02) 49 512530
