Newcastle Herald 17/06/2008
MEMBERS of the Samurai Judo Academy claimed gold, silver and bronze medals in their first Australian titles, held in Sydney over the June long weekend.
Liam Yokoyama, who only started judo this year, won every bout in the under-13 50-kilogram division by ippon the judo equivalent of a knockout.
"Liam is one of the most exciting juniors produced in Australia for some time," Samurai coach and 2004 Olympian Jessica Malone said.
"He is exactly the type of competitor we are seeking in the Hunter to raise the profile of Australian judo on the world stage."
Melinda Brown narrowly missed gold in the under-52kg division, after leading until the final 18 seconds, and Liam Bruckdorfer won bronze in the under-90kg division.
Harry Chalker, who won gold at the NSW titles in March, just missed out on a bronze medal despite giving away more than five kilograms to more experienced competitors.
